
Sampler, 1860s
Two trends led to the decline of samplers. Ink replaced stitching for marking, and with improved academic education for girls, sewing instruction declined. The perforated paper used here made it easier to see where to stitch, and it became a popular format for both samplers and decorative embroideries.
